Kawai Concert Artist CA99 digital piano

Shigeru Kawai SK-EX concert grand piano reproduced with SK-EX Rendering sound technology

The magnificent tone of Kawai’s flagship Shigeru Kawai SK-EX full concert grand piano is at the heart of the CA99 and CA79 digital pianos. Widely regarded as the ‘premier pianos of Japan’, Shigeru Kawai instruments grace the stages of concert halls and musical institutions throughout the world, and are prized for their tonal clarity and exceptional dynamic range.

In order to faithfully reproduce the stunning sound of a Shigeru digitally, Kawai has developed SK-EX Rendering – a piano-focussed sound engine that blends multi-channel, 88-key sampling with the latest resonance modelling technology. Multi-channel sampling captures the sound from different points of the Shigeru Kawai concert grand piano, allowing a broader range of tonal characteristics to be reproduced, and providing a more lively, authentic response to changes in dynamics.  This naturally expressive sound is further enriched by advanced resonance algorithms, which physically model the complex tonal interactions produced by the strings, damper, and various other parts of an acoustic piano, giving players the impression that they’re sitting at a living, breathing instrument.

Grand Feel III wooden-key action with Ebony & Ivory Touch key surfaces, counterweights, and ‘Let-Off’ mechanism

Articulating this beautiful SK-EX sound is the brand new Grand Feel III wooden-key keyboard action, which draws upon Kawai’s 90+ years of acoustic piano craftsmanship to provide an exceptionally realistic playing experience.  As with a grand piano, all of the Grand Feel III action’s eighty-eight black and white keys are crafted entirely from long pieces of wood, and pivot on a central balance pin with a smooth, seesaw-like motion.  This natural movement throws grade-weighted metal hammers located at the back of the keyboard, with their individual velocities precisely measured using triple-sensor technology for improved responsiveness and realism.

The Grand Feel III action’s extended wooden keys also boast an extra-long pivot length – matching that of a Kawai acoustic grand piano.  This provides a more consistent touch weight when playing towards the rear of the keyboard, while additional counterweights placed below each key help to further balance the weight of the action during pianissimo passages.  Finally, the Grand Feel III keyboard action also features Kawai’s Ebony & Ivory Touch key surfaces that gently absorb moisture to assist playing control, and possess a natural, matte finish that is smooth, but not slippery.

Kawai Concert Artist CA79 digital piano

Premium audio processing, amplification, and speaker technologies

Developed in collaboration with Japan’s leading premium audio equipment specialists, the CA99 and CA79 digital pianos utilise specialist components designed for high-end audio reproduction.  With state of the art technologies such as 1-bit DSD processing, dual DAC signal conversion, and exclusive Onkyo DIDRC彩库宝典app circuitry, the Concert Artists’ optimised power amplifiers reproduce the Shigeru Kawai grand piano sound with stunning richness and clarity.

Both instruments feature powerful 6-speaker delivery systems that utilise premium driver units, and custom-engineered diffuser panels which help to expand the pianos’ tonal projection in all directions.  These additional components create a 360° sound field around the instrument, ensuring a natural piano sound for both the player, and for those listening elsewhere in the room.  In addition to conventional speakers, the flagship CA99 also incorporates Kawai’s latest TwinDrive soundboard speaker system.  This unique acoustic projection technology harnesses transducer components to channel sound energy onto a real wooden soundboard, resulting in an even richer, more organic piano tone that faithfully reproduces the ambience of an acoustic piano.

The CA99 and CA79 also incorporate the high-performance Onkyo Discrete SpectraModule™ headphone amplifier, which combines with Kawai’s Spatial Headphone Sound technology to ensure the finest quality and most engaging listening experience, even when playing in privacy.

Integrated Bluetooth® MIDI and Audio connectivity

彩库宝典appIn addition to standard USB and MIDI jacks for connecting to computers or other instruments, the CA99 and CA79 digital pianos also feature integrated Bluetooth® MIDI and Audio technology that allows these instruments to communicate with supported smart devices wirelessly。  Once connected to a phone, tablet, or laptop, Concert Artist owners can enjoy a wide variety of exciting music-related apps that enhance their learning and playing experience, or stream high quality, low-latency aptX audio directly through the instruments’ premium amplifier and speaker systems without the need for any cables。

Kawai Concert Artist CA99 digital piano

Full-colour touchscreen display for intuitive, button-less operation

彩库宝典appThe CA99 and CA79 digital pianos feature a full-colour 5″ touchscreen display discreetly embedded within the instrument’s left cheekblock。 This high resolution touchscreen allows sounds and settings to be selected from an attractive user interface simply by tapping or swiping the display with a finger。  This screen can also be set to turn off automatically while playing, thus preserving the instruments’ acoustic piano-like appearance, and minimising any visual distraction to the performer。  The latest Concert Artist instruments adopt a new communication system, allowing all functions of the piano to also be controlled via a dedicated app for iOS and Android, with settings and adjustments recalled automatically every time the instrument is powered on。

Modern cabinet designs, available in a choice of finishes

The CA99 and CA79 are housed within premium quality wooden cabinets, with tapered legs and rounded edge details contributing to the instruments’ light and modern character.  As the flagship model of the series, the CA99 adopts a contemporary upright piano-inspired cabinet design, featuring a broad, simulated-leather lined music rest and Kawai’s Soft Fall closing mechanism.  Both instruments are available in Premium Rosewood, Satin Black, and Satin White wood-grain finishes, as well as classic Ebony Polish, allowing musicians to coordinate their piano with a range of traditional or modern interiors.

Stunning multi-channel grand piano sounds, an ultra-realistic wooden-key keyboard action, premium audio, amplification, and speaker technologies, convenient Bluetooth connectivity, and a modern touchscreen interface.

The new Kawai CA Series: The Concert Grand experience in the comfort of your home.

Kawai Novus NV5 wins ‘Good Design’ award http://www.chemtechco.com/news/kawai-novus-nv5-wins-good-design-award/ http://www.chemtechco.com/news/kawai-novus-nv5-wins-good-design-award/#comments Thu, 03 Oct 2019 06:00:56 +0000 http://www.chemtechco.com/?post_type=news&p=3595 Kawai Novus NV5 wins 'Good Design' award

Kawai is proud to announce that the Novus NV5 hybrid piano has received a prestigious ‘Good Design Award’ from the Japan Institute of Design Promotion.

The annual Good Design Award program invites companies from around the world to submit new products for assessment by the judging committee. This year’s program screened over 4,700 entries, with acknowledgements awarded to 1,420 works covering a broad range of categories.

The Novus NV5 hybrid piano was officially announced at the beginning of August 2019, with sales commencing in Japan and Europe from the start of October. This stunning instrument combines Kawai’s finest Millennium III acoustic upright piano keyboard action, including a real damper mechanism, with the latest SK-EX Rendering piano sound engine and premium amplification technologies developed in collaboration with audio specialists Onkyo, to deliver an incredibly realistic acoustic piano playing experience.

This award is the 24th Good Design Award presented to Kawai, and follows the success of the Novus NV10 which received the same prestigious accolade in 2017. Commenting on this year’s achievement, product design Shinichi Ito remarked:

“Many customers who enjoy playing the piano wish to cultivate their skills using an acoustic instrument, however there are often practical limitations such as space and volume that prevent this dream from being realised. The NV5 overcomes these restrictions, allowing pianists to enjoy the feeling of playing an acoustic piano at low volume or with headphones, in a very compact, stylish instrument.”

The Novus NV5 will be displayed alongside other winning works at the Good Design Exhibition 2019, to be held at Tokyo Midtown (Roppongi, Tokyo) from 31st October ~ 4th November. Pre-order sales of the instrument began commencing in Japan and Europe at the start of October, with other regions to follow in early 2020.

Kawai Novus NV5
Kawai Japan is extremely proud to announce the NV5, the latest addition to Kawai’s premium NOVUS series of hybrid pianos, and the second instrument in the line-up following the award-winning NV10 launched in late 2017.

This stylish upright model utilises the same Millennium III keyboard action as that of Kawai’s highly-regarded ‘K’ series professional upright pianos, with high-precision optical sensors detecting the movement of each hybrid hammer. As with the first Novus instrument, the NV5 includes a real acoustic piano damper mechanism, preserving the important physical connection between the keyboard and pedals to ensure the most authentic playing experience possible.

The NV5 has also been developed in collaboration with premium audio specialists, Onkyo, with a powerful amplification and delivery system that incorporates Kawai’s unique TwinDrive soundboard technology, reproducing the incredible sound of the Shigeru Kawai SK-EX concert grand piano. The modern NV5 supports both Bluetooth® MIDI and audio connectivity, and boasts a variety of convenient features, easily accessible from the large LCD touchscreen display embedded within the instrument’s left cheekblock. Its ultra-compact cabinet occupies a depth of just 46 cm – far smaller than that of a conventional upright piano, while the contemporary design and immaculate ebony polish finish guarantee that this stunning instrument will become the centrepiece of any room it occupies.

Main Features

- Millennium III Hybrid upright piano keyboard action with optical hammer sensing system
- Real upright piano damper mechanism for true key and pedal weighting
- SK-EX Rendering sound engine with multi-channel piano sampling
- Premium audio processing, amplification, and speaker technologies powered by Onkyo
- 3rd generation TwinDrive Soundboard Speaker system featuring Onkyo transducers
- Integrated Bluetooth® MIDI and audio for wireless communication with smart devices
- Modern 5″ LCD touchscreen display with intuitive swipe operation
- Flexible Virtual Technician function with 19 adjustable parameters

Millennium III Hybrid upright piano keyboard action, with optical hammer sensing system

The Novus NV5 is the first digital instrument to incorporate Kawai’s leading acoustic upright piano keyboard action technology, renowned for the pioneering use of extended spruce key sticks and innovative ABS Carbon components that are stronger, lighter, and more dimensionally stable than conventional wooden parts. The specially adapted Millennium III Hybrid彩库宝典app keyboard action utilised by the NV5 replaces traditional felt hammers with modern ABS equivalents that are individual graded in weight from bass to treble, while high-precision optical sensors take the place of metal strings, accurately reading the subtle movements of each hammer as the corresponding keys are played.

彩库宝典appIn addition to featuring a full acoustic upright piano keyboard action, the Novus NV5 also incorporates a real upright piano damper mechanism. While there are no strings inside the NV5 to require physical damping, this unique feature replicates the true weighting of an acoustic piano damper pedal, while also mechanically easing the keyboard action’s touch weight as the pedal is pressed – an important acoustic piano characteristic that only Novus instruments are able to reproduce.

Shigeru Kawai SK-EX concert grand piano reproduced with SK-EX Rendering sound technology

The magnificent tone of Kawai’s flagship Shigeru Kawai SK-EX full concert grand piano is at the heart of the Novus NV5 hybrid piano.  Widely regarded as the ‘premier pianos of Japan’, Shigeru Kawai instruments grace the stages of concert halls and musical institutions throughout the world, and are prized for their tonal clarity and exceptional dynamic range.

In order to faithfully reproduce the stunning sound of a Shigeru digitally, Kawai has developed SK-EX Rendering – an advanced sound engine that blends multi-channel, 88-key sampling with the latest resonance modelling technology. Multi-channel sampling captures the sound from different points of the Shigeru Kawai concert grand piano, allowing a broader range of tonal characteristics to be reproduced, and providing a more lively, authentic response to changes in dynamics. This naturally expressive sound is further enriched by newly developed resonance algorithms, which physically model the complex tonal interactions produced by the strings, dampers, and various other parts of an acoustic piano, giving players the impression that they’re sitting at a living, breathing instrument.

Premium audio processing, amplification, and speaker technology – powered by Onkyo

彩库宝典appDeveloped in collaboration with Onkyo, one of Japan’s leading premium audio equipment manufacturers, the Novus NV5 hybrid piano utilises specialist components designed for high-end audio reproduction。 With state of the art technologies such as 1-bit DSD processing, dual DAC signal conversion, and Onkyo’s exclusive DIDRC circuitry, the Novus’ optimised power amplifiers reproduce the Shigeru Kawai grand piano sound with stunning richness and clarity。

This high-fidelity sound is delivered through the NV5’s powerful speaker system, which combines Kawai’s exclusive TwinDrive soundboard technology with six premium quality Onkyo speaker drivers. This unique audio configuration harnesses custom transducer components to channel lower-range sound energy onto a real wooden soundboard, while higher frequencies are projected outward using top and front-facing speakers. The result is a remarkably authentic playing experience that immerses the performer, and faithfully reproduces the tonal ambience of an acoustic piano.

The Novus NV5 hybrid piano also incorporate Onkyo’s high-performance Discrete SpectraModule™ headphone amplifier, which combines with Kawai’s Spatial Headphone Sound (SHS) technology to guarantee the finest quality and most engaging listening experience, even when playing in privacy.

Integrated Bluetooth® MIDI and Audio connectivity

In addition to standard USB and MIDI jacks for connecting to computers or other instruments, the Novus NV5 hybrid piano also features integrated Bluetooth® MIDI and Audio technology that allows the instrument to communicate with supported smart devices wirelessly. Once paired to a phone, tablet, or laptop, Novus owners can enjoy a wide variety of exciting music-related apps that enhance their learning and playing experience, or stream audio from songs and videos directly through the instrument’s premium amplifier and speaker system without the need to connect any cables.

Full-colour touchscreen display for intuitive, button-less operation

The Novus NV5 hybrid piano incorporates a full-colour 5” touchscreen display, discreetly embedded within the left cheekblock. This high resolution touchscreen allows sounds and settings to be selected from an attractive user interface simply by tapping or swiping the display with a finger. The screen can also be set to turn off automatically while playing, thus preserving the instrument’s acoustic piano-like appearance, and minimising any visual distraction to the performer.

Ultra-slim upright cabinet design with broad music rest and Soft Fall fallboard

The Novus NV5’s stunning ebony polish cabinet is crafted in the same piano production facility as Kawai’s ‘K’ series upright instruments, ensuring exceptional build quality and an immaculate mirror-like finish. Its classic appearance is refined and refreshed by gently curved edge lines and elegantly tapered legs – free of the traditional, weighty toe-blocks – that lift and modernise the instrument’s presence.  The NV5 also incorporates the ultra-slow Soft Fall fallboard closing system from Kawai’s premium acoustic instruments, protecting the player’s hands and the piano’s luxurious finish from any harm that a jarring close might cause.

Contrasting its ebony polish finish, the Novus NV5’s topboard speakers are protected from dust and other foreign objects by soft fabric created by esteemed Danish textile house Kvadrat. This original material has been customised to meet Kawai’s specifications, with a woven mesh composition optimised for musical clarity and tonal projection, while its dark-grey yarn and pearl-like highlights further contribute to the Novus’ premium appearance.

Despite housing an acoustic piano keyboard action and damper mechanism, the NV5 is a remarkably compact instrument, occupying a depth of just 46 cm – far smaller than a conventional upright. This slim profile allows pianists to enjoy an authentic, acoustic piano playing experience, in confined spaces previously limited to a standard digital piano.

The finest acoustic upright piano keyboard action, a real acoustic piano damper mechanism, stunning multi-channel grand piano sounds, premium audio, amplification, and speaker technologies, modern Bluetooth and touchscreen convenience, and a strikingly beautiful, ultra-slim ebony polish cabinet.

Introducing the Kawai Novus NV5: A hybrid instrument that delivers the true acoustic piano experience.

■ Comments from Ilya Shmukler

I am so happy to receive the 1st prize and the audience award. I applied to this competition because I love Shigeru Kawai pianos. I first met Shigeru Kawai in 2015 when I went to another piano competition. When I tried Shigeru Kawai on the stage of piano selection, I really fell in love because the piano produced one of the best sounds I’ve ever heard. It was different from many other pianos. I can do everything I want with Shigeru Kawai pianos.

■ Comments from Prof. Katsumi Ueda, chairperson of the jury

This year’s competition received 234 applications, and 58 competitors were selected for the 1st round, 20 for the semifinal round and 6 for the final round。  The competitors had strong passion as well as thoughts on works and composers which they would like to express through the Shigeru Kawai Concert Grand Piano。 It was very difficult to differentiate and grade these points with marks, but we, the jury members, deeply listened to the performances at each stage。 I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to Prof。 Andrey Pisalev and Prof。 Pavel Nersessian for supporting the finalists today。

Now there are many young talented musicians around the world, and it is very hard for them to seize glory. However, the expectations and encouragement of the audience will support them. I would appreciate your support and encouragement to the young artists.

Piano sound: Celebrated concert grand pianos, reproduced using Onkyo technologies

The rich, expressive sound of Kawai’s celebrated concert grand pianos are at the heart of the new CN Series, with both the flagship Shigeru Kawai SK-EX and highly-acclaimed Kawai EX instruments lovingly recorded and faithfully produced using full 88-key stereo sampling.  With two distinctive Kawai concert grand pianos, a traditional upright, and the CN39’s newly added Shigeru Kawai SK-5 mid-sized grand readily available, CN Series owners can explore a variety of different piano sounds, and enjoy the contrasting properties of each. The latest CN Series instruments utilise Kawai’s advanced Progressive Harmonic Imaging technology, with algorithms that reproduce how an acoustic piano’s tonal character changes as dynamics increase.  This ensures seamless expression when playing from gentle pianissimo to thunderous fortissimo, without sudden changes in sound, while impressive polyphony specifications allow players to perform complicated pieces without held notes ‘dropping out’ unexpectedly.

These realistic piano sounds are delivered using high-performance sound hardware and speaker systems developed in partnership with Onkyo, one of Japan’s leading premium audio equipment manufacturers。  This technology ensures a faithful reproduction of the acoustic source, delivering crystal clear piano sounds with low-noise and minimal distortion – even at high volume。

Keyboard action: Responsive Hammer III weighted-key action with premium features

Connecting the CN Series’ stunning grand piano sounds to the player is the class-leading Responsive Hammer III keyboard.  This highly-regarded action features graded hammers that replicate the heavier bass and lighter treble hammers of an acoustic piano, with additional counterweights embedded within the front of each black and white key that assist playing control during pianissimo passages.  The CN29 and CN39 utilise a modern triple sensor key detection system for improved repetition speed and responsiveness, allowing a greater range of expressive control from staccato to legato playing.  The Responsive Hammer III action is equipped with premium Ivory Touch key surfaces that possess an attractive, natural matte finish that is smooth but not slippery, while let-off simulation reproduces the subtle resistance felt when playing the keys of a grand piano very softly, satisfying the expectations of the most experienced pianists.

Convenient features: Integrated Bluetooth, Line Out connectivity, built-in lessons

The impressive CN29 and CN39 offer a variety of useful features to complement their stunning grand piano sounds and authentic keyboard touch.  Integrated Bluetooth MIDI allows the instruments to communicate with supported smart devices, using Kawai’s Sound Museum and Virtual Technician apps to select and adjust sounds wirelessly, while the built-in lesson function (featuring a variety of classical etudes and Alfred songs), adjustable metronome and song recorder, are invaluable tools for aspiring pianists. A rich assortment of additional instrumental voices, along with Dual and Split playing modes add greater variety to players’ performances, while the special Four Hands mode divides the keyboard into two independent sections, allowing teacher and student to practise and play together using a single instrument.  The latest CN Series models also inherit Kawai’s advanced SHS technology from the larger CS and CA Series instruments, enhancing the depth and realism of sounds heard through headphones or earphones, while also helping to reduce auditory fatigue when listening for extended periods of time.

The CN39 raises the bar further with additional Bluetooth Audio functionality, allowing audio from songs and videos to be streamed through the instrument’s high fidelity 4-speaker Onkyo output system without additional cables.  Moreover, the powerful recorder function also allows MP3 or WAV audio and MIDI song files to be recorded and overdubbed to a USB memory device, and shared with friends and family online.  Both CN Series models include USB-MIDI and standard MIDI connectors for flexibility with computers and other devices, while the CN39 also offers stereo Line In and Line Out jacks that allow the instrument to be enjoyed in larger settings such as churches or school halls.

Attractive design: Modern cabinet appearance with discrete control panel and OLED display

The latest CN Series pianos are housed within premium quality wooden cabinets that incorporate a flat fascia and raised upper board.  The control panel for both models is discretely embedded within the left cheek-block, helping to preserve the instruments’ upright piano-like character, while their high-resolution OLED displays remain clear and easily readable from a seated position.  Attractive curved leg and minimalist toe block design contributes to the pianos’ slender appearance, with Premium Rosewood, Satin Black, and Satin White finishes that are suitable for a range of traditional and modern interiors.

Stunning grand piano sounds, a class-leading keyboard action, and a variety of modern, convenient features – all housed within an attractive and inspiring cabinet.

Kawai CN Series: A new standard in digital piano value and performance.
